Airbnb Makes Offer to Buy All of Mexico City: Sources
US rental company seeks to conquer entire Aztec capital ahead of 2026 World Cup
MEXICO CITY — Airbnb, the San Francisco, California-based homestays and experiences company, has made an offer to buy the entire metropolitan area of Mexico City in an effort to completely gentrify and flood the 700-year-old Aztec capital with tourists and digital nomads, according to documents reviewed by La Chancla News.
The offer includes “even the crappy neighborhoods” of the 9-million resident megapolis, such as Tepito, Xochimilco, Iztapalapa and large swaths of the Centro Histórico, Airbnb executives wrote in emails sent to the Mexico City government.
“Thanks to us, the Roma-Condesa-Juárez-Polanco bubble has been completely transformed into an international borough full of influencers and foodies,” a company executive wrote. “Now is the perfect time for us to expand and conquer the rest of the Aztec empire.”
With 2026 FIFA World Cup right around the corner, Airbnb said it is hopeful the offer will be approved this month.
“The sooner Mexico City accepts the offer, the quicker we can begin uprooting happy families from the homes they inherited from their grandparents,” an executive wrote in an email. “Sentimental value has no monetary value and once we own every last apartment in town, the boom in pilates studios and cafés with English names will make this place unrecognizable.”

The line about sentimental value having no monetery value hits diferent when you see whats actually happning in CDMX. That Roma Condesa bubble realy did transform into something unrecognizable. Next thing you know they'll be ofering the Zocalo as an Airbnb Experience complete with a complimentary oat milk latte.
