At Least 22% of Tulum Tourists On Ecstasy Right Now: Study
One in five tourists likely to be overly affectionate, constantly grinding teeth
TULUM—No matter the time of day, week, month or year, at least 22% of all tourists in the Mexican beach town of Tulum are under the influence of some form of ecstasy, Molly or MDMA, according to a study by the pharmaceutical think-tank Such A Vibe.
“In 10,000 interviews conducted with Tulum tourists during the observation period, more than 2,200 of them reported they were either high on ecstasy or still feeling the effects of some really good shit from the previous night,” the study found. “Those observed on the drug were affectionate, professed their love to multiple people and had pupils as dilated as the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings.”
To conduct the study, researchers followed Tulum tourists for months and accompanied them to all-night Mayan jungle and cenote raves, beach fire ceremonies that masqueraded as spiritual awakenings, and laser shows where people on ketamine stared at the sky.
Additionally, the study found most Tulum ecstasy users to be similar in appearance and dress attire.
“The majority of MDMA consumers were draped in shaman-like bohemian tribal gowns, excessive necklaces and bracelets, floral crowns and overpriced fedora hats people wear when trying very, very hard to fit in,” the study says. “Many users reported being on a quest to enlightenment and inner peace, and to achieve it they turned to DJs dressed like jaguars, a copious amount of feathered dreamcatchers and several hours of jaw clenching.”
