Every Single Restaurant In Mexico City Awarded Michelin Star
Toks, Oxxo, Vips and Buffalo Wild Wings among restaurants to receive prestigious culinary honor
MEXICO CITY — The Michelin Guide announced today that all dining establishments that offer food in Mexico City — including the convenient store Oxxo, the Mexican IHOP equivalent Vips, and the three-wheeled street carts that serve soggy Tamales Oaxaqueños — have been awarded a Michelin star for culinary excellence.
“A few years ago we gave a Michelin star to a random street taco stand in Mexico City and it became wildly popular even though the tacos are really just above average,” the Michelin judges said in a press release. “We think this will be a great opportunity for other overlooked restaurants in the capital city, like Chili’s for example, to really get the attention they deserve.”
Amid criticisms following the announcement, the Michelin Guide stood by its decision, explaining that huevos rancheros from Toks, breaded mozzarella sticks from Buffalo Wild Wings and the El Vikingo hot dogs from Oxxo do in fact meet the standards of global culinary excellence.
“When you taste the El Vikingo from Oxxo, you can tell the mystery meat was prepared with high quality, locally sourced ingredients,” the Michelin judges said in the statement. “The hot dog is clearly the work of a master chef deftly telling the story of Mexico’s rich culinary traditions with every mouthwatering bite.”
